Retired Law Enforcement Officer's Firearm Course

8 Hour Annual Police Firearms Course

Recommendation:

This course is recommended for all retired law enforcement classes of police officers, as defined in Section 1.20.34 of the Criminal Procedure Law, and peace officers, as defined in Section 2.10 of the Criminal Procedure Law.

Prerequisite(s):

In order to be eligible to attend this course, the student must:

  1. be a qualified retired law enforcement officer who retired in good standing from service with a public agency as a law enforcement officer, other than for reasons of mental instability;
  2. before such retirement, was authorized by law to engage in or supervise the prevention, detection, investigation, or prosecution of, or the incarceration of any person for, any violation of law, and had statutory powers of arrest;
    1. before such retirement, was regularly employed as a law enforcement officer for an aggregate of 15 years or more; or
    2. retired from service with such agency, after completing any applicable probationary period of such service, due to a service-connected disability, as determined by such agency;
  3. has a nonforfeitable right to benefits under the retirement plan of the agency;
  4. during the most recent 12-month period, has met, at the expense of the individual, the State's standards for training and qualification for active law enforcement officers to carry firearms;
  5. is not under the influence of alcohol or another intoxicating or hallucinatory drug or substance; and
  6. is not prohibited by Federal law from receiving a firearm

Course Curriculum:

This course meets the standards required by the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004 (H.R. 218), and the State of New York Division of Criminal Justice Services, Municipal Police Training Council.

  1. Penal Law Article 35 - Use of Physical Force and Deadly Physical Force
  2. Firearms Training - Mandatory Objectives

Equipment:

The student is required to provide the following items:

  • Classroom (except firearms training):
    • Notebook, paper and pens
    • Highlighters (minimum 2)
    • NY Penal Law and NY Criminal Procedure Law

  • Classroom for Firearms training and Range:
    • Holster
    • 3 Magazines or 2 Speedloaders
    • Ammunition pouch(es)
    • Ammunition (minimum 100 rounds)
    • Eye protection
    • Ear protection
    • Appropriate civilian clothing (BDU's or similar)
    • Inclement weather gear
